1. Is your website an online store?

No, our website is not an online store. It is a reference tool to help consumers find products made in Canada. Each product has links to points of sale, either online on in-store. We feel this is the best way to educate consumers and make it easier for them to buy Canadian-made products of all kinds.

2. How do you qualify a product as being “Made in Canada”?

We base ourselves on the guidelines set forth by the federal government via the Competition Bureau of Canada, which stipulate that any product of which 51% of the total value has been added in Canada can carry the “Made in Canada”. In the case of food products, since January 1st 2009, revised guidelines for food labelling have been put into place by the federal government, clarifying the meaning of “Made in Canada” or “Product of Canada” for consumers.

3. What if I mistakenly add a product that is not made in Canada?

Mistakes happen. As soon as you discover the error, please remove the product. If this happens repeatedly (up to 3 times) and the erroneous listings are reported by consumers or representative of BuyCanadianFirst.ca, we reserve the right to terminate your account permanently, and offer no refund of membership fees.

4. Why is there no French version of the website?

The French version of the website is planned for the Fall of 2014.

5. I only carry a few products that are made in Canada. Is there a minimum?

No, there's no minimum! Consult our Membership packages to find just the right solution for you. Prices start at only $10.00 per month!

6. What do these icons mean? Can I use them in my product listings?

All our icons can be purchased as an upgrade for use in your product listings, and will give your products greater visibility on the site. Prices start at only $5.00 per month!


First Nations icon
  This icon is for products made by Canada's First Nations people.

Handmade icon
  This icon is for products made by hand.

Natural icon
  This icon is for products made with natural or eco-friendly ingredients and materials.

Mompreneur icon
  This icon is for products created by a Mom-driven business.

Super Canadian icon
  This icon is for products 100% Canadian-made — from the materials and ingredients to the packaging or labelling.

Gluten-free icon
  This icon is for gluten-free products.

7. I see manufacturers of some products that I sell listed on the site. Can I add my retail location to their listings?

Contact your manufacturers directly. They can add your location to the listings in question. If you would like your company to stand out better, you can always purchase a membership of your own and have more control over how your products will be displayed on our site.

8. Can I include a map link to my store locations?

Our site does not currently feature a mapping functionality for brick-and-mortar points of sale. However, if you have such a feature on your own site, you may add that URL to your listing under "Find a store near you now".

9. I'm a retailer with multiple locations. Can I list all locations?

You can certainly list the brick-and-mortar locations separately, if you wish. Alternatively, if your website features a store finder tool, you could simply add that URL to your listings under "Find a store near you now”.

10. I really want to become a member, but I don’t have time to upload my products. Can you help?

Of course! Please contact us and we’ll arrange to have your products uploaded for you for a reasonable fee.

13. I'm a retailer and the products we sell are already listed by other retailers. How can I make mine stand out?

There are different ways that you can do this: consider upgrading your package or purchasing our product icons. You can also choose to display superior quality images and search-friendly product descriptions.

14. I don't have a website, but would like to add my products to this site. Is this possible?

Of course! We accept members who only have brick-and-mortar stores, as long as they have high-quality images of the products they wish to feature.

15. Who can become a member?

Any manufacturer of Canadian-made consumer goods, or retailer selling Canadian-made consumer goods, or a Canadian-owned service provider can become a member of BuyCanadianFirst.ca. Canadian-made products are defined by the standards set forth by the Competition Bureau of Canada’s publication.

16. What kind of payments do you accept for memberships?

Payments can be set-up on a yearly or monthly basis (over 12 months), which ever way best accomodates your business.

All our transactions for membership dues are handled via PayPal, but you do not have to have a PayPal account to make a transaction. Simply enter your Visa or Mastercard details on the PayPal form (under "Don't have a PayPal account?" section) and your credit card payment will be processed as usual.
