1. Is your website an online store?

No, our website is not an online store. It is a reference tool to help consumers find products made in Canada. Each product has links to points of sale, either online on in-store. We feel this is the best way to educate consumers and make it easier for them to buy Canadian-made products of all kinds.

2. What happens to members who post products that aren’t made in Canada?

These members are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. We are reasonable and know that sometimes mistakes happen, but repeat offenders will not be tolerated. The integrity of the information on our site is our top priority.

3. Can I buy stuff on your website?

We are not an online store and no purchases can be made on the site. We simply direct consumers to points-of-purchase (either online or in brick-and-mortar stores) where they can find Canadian-made products and services.

4. What is the difference between “Product of Canada” and “Made in Canada”?

We base ourselves on the guidelines set forth by the federal government via the Competition Bureau of Canada, which stipulate that any product of which 51% of the total value has been added in Canada can carry the “Made in Canada”. In the case of food products, since January 1st 2009, revised guidelines for food labelling have been put into place by the federal government, clarifying the meaning of “Made in Canada” or “Product of Canada” for consumers.

5. Are the prices accurate?

Prices are an indication only. Merchants may sell for more or less, depending on the item. Also, some products are listed by manufacturers who prefer not to include prices, as these vary greatly by location. Always check at the point of purchase and don’t forget that federal and provincial (where applicable) sales taxes are not included in the listed price.

11. Do the people behind BuyCanadianFirst.ca also buy Canadian first?

You have no idea! Every one of us tries very hard to buy Canadian-made items, from office furniture to clothes, gifts, kitchenware, and even cars! 80% of our office content is made in Canada. The only reason that number is not higher is because of computer equipment and peripherals!

And yes, Isabelle drives a Canadian-made car. ;-)

12. How do you know if the products are really made in Canada?

BuyCanadianFirst.ca always conducts a certain amount of initial research on the retailers or manufacturers who request member status. And before they can upload their products to our site, all potential members must agree to our Terms and Conditions, which includes an attestation that their products are indeed made in Canada.

We also conduct random physical spot checks on actual products. Finally, we rely on consumers like you to let us know if you find fault with a specific product. We do our best, but the ultimate responsibility for the integrity of the product rests with our members.
