If you are every looking for floral, frills, pastels and all that feminine fuss - Jordan de Ruiter is the label to wear! This young and talented designer named Jordan is from Creemore, Ontario and urges all of her customers to play dress up everyday! Playing "dress-up" is quite simple to do when sporting these fabulous Canadian-made dresses.

sam01_march1.jpg

Her collection is sold at over five stores right across Canada, with new fashion boutiques adding on each season. For Spring 2013 we see whimsical dresses with detailed structure sewn into all the right places. These feminine looking pieces are made with Canadian-made quality sewn into each stitch in hopes that you wear these styles forever!

With the outfits I wore this week, you can see an elegant and vintage essence in each silhouette. My favourite, has got to be the Markova Dress with its modest neckline and subtle lace scallop detail. Jordan is able to take this classic lace bodice and pair it with an extremely fun over-sized ivory tutu. It's brilliant the way these two styles merge together to create a dress that any gal would love in their wardrobe!

Fashion Takes Action

This week was dedicated to the only non-profit organization that focuses on sustainability in the fashion industry  - in CANADA!  This popular organization is called Fashion Takes Action (FTA) and was founded by social entrepreneur Kelly Drennan. She is one awesome lady, who is devoted to making change within the fashion industry - known for its many negative social and environmental impacts including labour, energy, waste, water, and the use of toxic chemicals. The FTA represents several labels that all have a dedication to eco practises and bringing sustainability to their customers through their clothing lines.

Where to begin, when there were so many amazing outfits this week from a dynamic group of labels that manufacture in Canada! It was great to be introduced to several new brands, some faves were the Tess Barbieri Cranberry Fitted dress along with several pieces from the well-known Thieves label by Sonja den Elzen. Particularly loved the sailor jeans made from recycled polyester and hemp, they fit great and with proper care will truly last the test of time in design and quality.

Black Daffodil boutique in the Junction Area of Toronto is filled with unique accessories and a variety of Canadian-made clothing labels. Store owner Cynthia does an amazing job curetting her store with everything a gal would ever need in building the perfect wardrobe! She also runs the Black Daffodil clothing label that merges 1940s glamour with wearable modern clothing for the everyday woman. Cynthia and her team love the classic sophisticated pin up woman aesthetic and strive to make that look possible to wear day to day. For their clothing line they choose mostly natural fabrics that breathe and have a bit of stretch for comfort.

sam_feb1.jpg

Besides the several reason to shop local - one of the best things in my opinion is: Often first prototypes are items the designers themselves are longing for in their own wardrobe! Therefore you are usually getting a quality piece that has been well thought-out. Black Daffodil designer Cynthia Rea went through exactly this - she wanted a pencil skirt that she could easily move in, as they are notoriously rigid. Therefore she created a masterpiece for us women, and believe me all week I have been enjoying the highest mobility in these comfy-chic skirts! See these skirts in action, in my latest video showing behind the scenes from my last photo shoot.

A purse is truly your best friend, it usually lasts several years and can be found by your side at all times!  This week I fell in LOVE with the most beautiful purses and accessories from Montreal label, RIMANCHIK.

Founded in 2003 by a partnership between Sandra Singh and Victor Nolivos, this label today can be found at over 15 retailers right across the country. Sandra and Victor are self-taught designers with an experimental approach to design. They are  heavily involved in every part of their business, ensuring the most unique and quality design for their customers. I find this is common with several Canadian fashion companies, as they really do put their entire heart and soul into their product. This focus and enthusiasm for the business transcends through their product and into your hands!

sam_jan25.jpg

Each season the RIMANCHIK collection shows us the highest level of Canadian-made workmanship as they perfect their styles using the highest quality materials. The fuchsia Penelope bag is a work of art, with its unique cut-out detail and brilliant mixing of leather, felt and more!

The design and manufacturing is done in Montreal in-house at their studio where they devote their time to creating the best accessories incorporating edge, femininity, structure and color. To read more on my review please visit Samantha Stylish for more information on RIMANCHIK.

Winter Fun in the City - Montreal

By / Par: Guest bloggers

Category / Catégorie: Coast to coast tourism

The holidays have come to an end, most of us have likely over-indulged in delicious holiday fare, and now it's time for those good old New Year's resolutions. I stopped making those many years ago, because I thought it was a bit ridiculous to come up with new resolutions only once a year. Instead, I give myself small goals throughout the year; that way I feel like I've accomplished so much more, rather than making a resolution at the beginning of the year and likely forgetting about it halfway through.

One of the things I do keep telling myself every year is that I really should go outside and play more in the snow. Seeing as winter is by far my least favorite season, I figure that if I go out and do fun winter activities, I won't find the season so long and dreary. We are very fortunate here in Montreal, as we have a lot of things going on in the city in the winter and many fun activities to do that are mere steps away from home. And if you're making those fitness resolutions, it can make keeping them somewhat easier.

One of Montreal's major attractions is Mount-Royal, or as the locals here call it "The Mountain". You can strap on your warmest La Canadienne boots, made in Canada of course, and take a nice, leisurely winter stroll to Beaver Lake, where you can do some ice skating, sledding or "crazy carpeting". The mountain is a great getaway, because as soon as you start walking up, you completely forget that you're in the middle of the city and it feels like you're hiking in a forest up North!

If you're more of a city slicker like myself, there are many other fun things to do outdoors in the city in the winter that will entertain you and almost make you forget that it's cold outside. For the last few years, we've had a music festival here called Igloofest which usually runs for about 2 weeks (Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) starting in mid January, at the Old Port of Montreal. It is basically a big music event with outdoor shows, DJ's, and dancing o' plenty. You'll really want to dress warmly for this one, sp take out all your best winter gear, fleece undergarments, your warmest Canada Goose coat and just dance the night away!

goose_women.jpg

Another excellent way to have fun outdoors in the city is the Montreal High Lights Festival, which runs from February 21st to March 3rd this year, and has a ton of different activities to please everyone from the kids to the grandparents. It is one of the largest winter festivals in the world, combining both indoor and outdoor activities. It illuminates the city and is a pleasure for the eyes as well as the heart. When the sun goes down, brace yourself for a spectacular event filled with lights, fireworks, acrobats, digital projections and much more. The festival closes with a bang, with its ‘'All-Nighter'' celebrations where you can enjoy hundreds of free activities, shows both onscreen and onstage, all in the great outdoors.

So, as you can see, there is no shortage of fun to be had outside in Montreal in the winter; you just have to be prepared for the weather, which can be very unpredictable, and just go out there and enjoy everything winter has to offer.

What are YOU going to do outdoors this winter?

Brilliant Birds of North America

This week we headed from beautiful British Columbia to trendy Montreal, focusing on clothing label Birds of North America. This brand name comes from designer Hayley Gibson's sense of quirkiness and fun; she wanted a neat and modern name that would be truly unforgettable!

sam_dec21_002.jpg

Founded in 2007, this label is sold at over 30 stores across North America, with 20 of them located for us here in Canada. Production in Canada is important to Hayley because workers are paid a fair wage. Her line shows the true value of Canadian-made clothing and brings a sense of the skill of human labour that goes into clothing making.

sam_dec21_003.jpg

Hayley's inspiration for her Fall-Winter 2012 collection was reflecting on a theme and time when women would have just one dress.  They would cherish it, wear it proudly, take the utmost care of it and its style would remain classic and timeless. This preciousness for fashion is what inspired her to create a collection of stunning dresses that each carries their own beautiful understated details while mixing femininity with class.

sam_dec21_001.jpg

My favourite look is the eggplant purple lace dress, called the Nightingale. Naturally, each season all of the dresses are named after birds - Designer Hayley promises this is the only detail with the bird theme when it comes to her brand! The Nightingale dress is cut elegantly to form and shape any body type. The lace is carefully placed with the lining creating a beautiful drape and quality feel. Whether you wear this dress to your upcoming family event or NYE Gala this Canadian-made dress will turn heads for sure!

Lovely Lilikoi

Lilikoi Clothing, located in beautiful British Columbia, was founded in 2003. Head designer and founder Barbara Boswell creates collections each season for real women. Working out of Nelson, BC this successful brand can be found at over 60 locations across North America. Renowned for the stunning prints these unique pieces of art are actually original hand drawings from Barbara herself, which are transformed when they are printed onto breath-taking fabric. A Lilikoi dress can be spotted from across the room, not only by the bold print but by the confidence oozing from the women wearing her dress proudly!

sam_dec14_003.jpg

My favourite look this week has got to be the teal Miley dress, which is also available in red and black. The neckline, the A-line, the sleeves, the feel of the fabric, I could go on and on about how much I love this dress!

sam_dec14_001.jpg

Another beauty is the slick red Carla dress, I fell in love with the femininity of this dress which surprised me because it doesn't include Barbara's signature prints.

sam_dec14_002.jpg

Lilikoi collections each season use sustainable fibres such as bamboo, organically grown cotton and linen. It is important to designer Barbara and her team that they are careful in their choice of fabric and suppliers in order to ensure both the quality and sustainability of their materials. (These fabrics will not pill in the wash.) They strive to understand the origins of the fabrics and the conditions of those who manufacture them. Besides producing beautiful clothing they are truly responsible with their business practices in Canada.

Charlie Boutique

After running a blog focused on made-in-Canada fashion for almost a year, I realize that boutiques are an important part of this industry in addition to the Canadian fashion designers. The stores that support goods produced and designed in Canada are critical to determining the success of a fashion label.

This week I worked with five fashion looks from the Charlie Boutique in the Queen West neighbourhood of Toronto, ON. This adorable shop is filled with chic outfits that are suitable for women of all ages, shapes and budgets. Shop owner Erin Swan started her boutique in 2008, and it has been a success ever since. Each season she carefully curates her boutique with exclusive Canadian labels and a sprinkling of gorgeous brands from around the United States and Europe. Taking pride in the Canadian brands, she works exclusively with Canada's hottest talent each season to ensure her shoppers get the latest and greatest Canadian-made fashion. Not only does she care about her customers, but she cares about growing these fashion businesses. The relationship ensures growth for both the fashion designer’s label and the shop to serve her customers with the best designs.

There were several new labels that I was introduced to this week, and it was thrilling! I fell in love with the Allison Wonderland label, whether it was the bright blue winter coat or the sequined mini, the outfits were outstanding.

sam_nov30_001.jpg

sam_nov30_002.jpg

Another great outfit was the little black dress from Montreal designer, Valerie Dumaine - every gal needs a little black dress and I hope it is this Canadian-made one! The cut out in the back was a very feminine touch along with the geometric pleating, making this dress truly unique.
