Yours to Celebrate

Day 13 of our Cross Canadian Countdown finds us at the studios of a Canadian treasure.

"On November 2, 1936, the Canadian Broadcasting Act replaced the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission with a Crown corporation known as CBC/Radio-Canada."

That was seventy-five years ago, Canada, and "Yours to Celebrate" is the slogan CBC came up with to set the tone for their 75th anniversary celebrations. When you visit their site , you will find all sorts of made-in-Canada  archives. You will be walking down Memory Lane in no time!

 CBC/RADIO Canada

If you are like me, you grew up listening to the CBC on the radio and watching on TV. Many of us, I am sure, remember loving Mr.Dressup, Casey and Finnigan. Who hasn't looked up, waaaaaaaaaay up, to see the Friendly Giant, Jerome and Rusty or pulled up a chair to sit awhile in front of the fire?

You'll find all your CBC favourites  in their site and you can watch or listen to them. Check out the interactive timeline ! What a great opportunity to share your memories with your children or grandchildren!

What was your favourite CBC programme when you were growing up?

Happy Birthday Canada!

Dear Canada,

What can we give a country that has everything? Water’s coming out of your ears, and oil too (as soon as prices go back up!). You have more culture and diversity that should be allowed, not to mention national treasures such as Rick Mercer! You are so hard to shop for!

I know, how about some unabashed love? Something warm & fuzzy that will carry you all year long? Here are my top 8 favorite odes to you Canada, in no particular order:

Enjoy!

1) My son’s favorite jingle

2) Cool claymation

3) Crafty dominoes

4) Rick Mercer

5) It’s hip to be Canadian

6) Anthem animation

7) A classic

8) Short & sweet

With much love,

Isabelle & family

Canadians are Smart

Blog post written by: Joseph Wilburn

I probably didn't have to tell you that, you already knew Canadians are a petty intelligent bunch. Now that I've paid you a compliment, I'm not actually talking about individual Canadians today, rather I'm talking about SMART Technologies located here in Calgary.

They've got some pretty cool high tech devices that some really "smart" people had to have spent long nights thinking about. Taking the office from low tech to high tech isn't easy especially when you're staff is busy and don't have time to train on new things.

What does SMART Technologies do?

They build unique visual tools for the education, business and government sectors.

 What does that mean?

It means they have taken your run-of-the mill visual devices and turned them into something really cool and useful.

One example of the revolutionary tools they have created is the SMART Board, an interactive whiteboard. This isn't your old whiteboard. Instead, the touch sensitive display allows you to control computer applications directly from the whiteboard, draw digital notes on it in "digital ink" and you can even save your work for later. No more having to erase your entire notes for the next group.

SMART Technologies has taken your old audio/visual tools and turned them on their heads. Many of their products are innovative and creative. You may not have thought about changing some of the old classroom and office standbys like the overhead projector, but they did.

Check out what I think must be the coolest solution they've designed, the SMART Table. They've created this video showing a prototype in action (you can watch it on YouTube here). The SMART table is an interactive table where students can actually solve problems in 3D action. It's way cool! I almost want to go back to school, so I can use this. It definitely beats the old pen, paper and workbooks.

SMART Technologies is definitely a Canadian leader in changing how the people see, hear and collaborate with one another.  Take a look at their full suite of products. They're sure to amaze you!
