Giving your rooms a facelift is a great way to lift your spirits in these tough economic times and you don't have to spend a lot to give your home a makeover. Just focus on one room at a time. Get yourself a little note book and go room by room, making notes on what might make each room look better. There are many thrifty ways to save on redecorating and it is very satisfying to use your own creativity to change your decor.

To Paint or Not to Paint?

Just the thought of painting ceilings and walls makes me tired, and having to buy gallons of paint can be expensive. You don't have to paint all the walls in a room; change the whole look and feel of any room by making one wall a focal point. Paint in a neutral light colour and the room will seem brighter and larger; a dark color gives a room a feeling of warmth and makes a big room seem cozier.

You don't need to paint at all if you don't want to get into that. A good wash job will freshen up any room.

I'll be honest from the get-go here, I don't normally deal with diamonds. No, I normally let Jeeves do that for me because leaving the manz is just a lot of work.

Nevertheless, I've done some digging on some interesting diamond information that I'd like to share with you all.

Canada's diamond industry is growing by leaps and bounds. This is great, because that just helps to add to the already long list of commodities that Canada produces and exports. It helps our northern commmunities begin a path towards economic growth and development. First Nations, Inuit and Métis benefit from the royalties and the new jobs created in the north. There are 4 major diamond mines in Canada: Ekati (NWT), Diavik (NWT), Snap Lake (NWT), Victor (ON). Of note, the Snap Lake and Victor mines were just opened last month by Debeers (of South African fame). There are also other projects waiting to come online between 2012 and 2015: Gascho Kué (NWT), Foxtrot (QC), and Fort-à-la-Corne (SK).

From a technical background, Canadian diamonds aren't just stunning to look at, they are actually some of the best in the world. Now, I know that we cannot control that aspect, it's just a nice perk that they happened to form under the ground that is under our country.

Now that you know all this good information about Canadian diamonds, don't go thinking that you can just fly up north and pick up one off the ground to take home. That's illegal. No matter, why go through all the trouble of cutting, polishing and setting that stone when there are jewelers and fine retailers you can go where all that has been done for you. When it's all said and done isn't it great to just be able to go and pick out a beautiful rock for that special someone in your life?

I love this time of year. It's harvest season! But, instead of talking about your typical corn, apples and pears, I found something that we produce in Canada that you wouldn't normally associate with Canada: rice! More specifically, I'm talking about wild rice. 

Canadian wild rice is primarily harvested on the Canadian Shield of northern Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. And, as luck would have it, our vendor Shoal Lake Wild Rice is one of those harvestors you need to know about so you can get some for your own pantry.

Before I did the research for this story, I had no idea of the labour involved in cultivating wild rice for the table. It's an involved but interesting process:

Once the rice is picked, it is then cured for a period of time to let it ripen further. Then, the rice is roasted to give it the distinctive flavour and colour that makes wild rice so unique. Next, the wild rice undergoes a husking process to separate the kernel from the chaff before being sent down a gravity table to sort the kernels by size. Finally, it is packed and ready to be sent to the consumer.

Our vendor, Shoal Lake Wild Rice, was founded in the 1930s by Peter Ratuski and is still owned by the Ratuski family in Keewatin, Ontario in the amalgamated Kenora, Ontario area.

When you check out their website, you will see the various lines they have to offer. You may also know their products under the La Verendrye, Canoe, Zizania, Oh Canada and Pure Canadian brands. Each one has a differnent twist, so be sure to check out and find one that suits your cooking needs. You can order their products directly from their website. Nous les Canadiens suivons la mode de près n’est-ce pas? Je sais que la plupart d’entre vous pensez à Paris et à Milan dès que le sujet de la mode est abordé. Cependant, j’aimerais vous ramener sur ce côté de l’Atlantique quelques instants et attirer votre attention sur Montréal. Oui, Montréal. Je ne crois pas vous solliciter quelque effort particulier côté imagination. Permettez-moi de vous expliquer…

Mais ne vous fiez surtout pas à ma parole car Tristan affiche sa liste de prix sur son site Internet. Ainsi, vous pourrez sérieusement remettre en question l’idée que bien s’habiller avec des vêtements canadiens coûte les yeux de la tête.

Qu’il s’agisse de sous-vêtements ou de vêtements d’extérieur, décontractés ou habillés, je suis certain que vous trouverez ce que vous cherchez parmi les collections de Tristan. Leur style est très branché sans toutefois être trop tendance pour ainsi éviter que vous ne portiez ces vêtements qu’une fois ou deux avant qu’ils n’aient perdu tout leur attrait. Tristan est conscient que des vêtements de qualité représentent un investissement qui devient rentable à long terme.

Nous, les canadiens apprécions réellement toute prise de position de la part de ceux qui nous comprennent le mieux, et c’est ce que Tristan a fait. Avec tout ce bombardement constant de mauvaises nouvelles de la part des médias concernant les fabricants canadiens, j’ai eu envie de répandre une nouvelle positive concernant un phénomène qui se produit actuellement dans notre secteur manufacturier: le Canada est un chef de file au sein du mouvement de technologie écologique (verte).

Cela signifie que nous fabriquons plusieurs ordinateurs et composantes ici même au Canada. Lorsque vous choisissez d’acheter des produits locaux, vous aidez à soutenir un fabricant d’ordinateur bien de chez nous tout en participant à la protection de l’environnement.

J’ai parfois l’impression que les commerçants des petites municipalités sont les seuls à avoir trouvé le moyen d'offrir des produits de qualité (tels qu’Intel) fabriqués au Canada. Dans le passé, plusieurs fabricants régionaux d’ordinateurs avaient de la difficulté à faire concurrence aux géants de l’informatique dont les budgets marketing étaient nettement supérieurs. Aujourd’hui, même si l’aspect marketing continue à jouer un rôle important au niveau des ventes, l’émergence du consommateur soucieux a permis de réduire la prédominance marketing des gros joueurs.

Au Canada, nous avons tout de même quatre fabricants: MDG (siège social à Oakville en Ontario), Northern Micro (situé à Ottawa en Ontario), et Ciara Tech (dont les bureaux sont à Montréal), qui fabriquent des systèmes respectant les normes EPEAT. Cette norme a été mise sur pied afin d’aider les clients soucieux de l’environnement à choisir des appareils électroniques qui répondent à leurs besoins. Vient s’ajouter à cela d’autres normes soutenues par l’industrie telles qu’Energy Star et le Recyclage des produits électroniques Canada (RPEC) conçues pour desservir la même communauté de consommateurs de la création de produits à la gestion des déchets électroniques.

Le fait d’acheter des fabricants canadiens d’électronique en sachant qu’ils aident à contribuer à la solution de réduction de l’énergie et des déchets électroniques est une situation gagnante autant pour le fabricant que pour le consommateur. Je vous encourage donc à jeter un coup d’œil à ces fabricants et autres sites Web de l’industrie afin de faire un choix éclairé quant aux produits que vous désirez vous procurer et qui répondront à vos besoins.

La semaine dernière, j'ai eu le plaisir de participer au tournage d'un épisode de l'émission Active-toi produite par la télévision Franco-Ontarienne. La série s'adresse aux ados et chaque épisode traite d'un enjeu social et politique qui les touchent. Nous avions été invités à élaborer sur le thème de la consommation locale et de ce que ça représente aux yeux des jeunes de 11-14 ans, en utilisant notre site Web comme outil de recherche de produits faits au Canada. L'épisode sera diffusée durant la saison 2008-2009 et je mettrai ce billet à jour dès que j'aurai plus de détails.

Entre-temps, voici un petit mot de nos 3 participants sur leur expérience :

Bonjour cher lecteur d'Achetons Canadien d'Abord,

Nous voulons vous renseigner sur notre recherche. Nous cherchions de la pâte à modeler et de la compote de pommes produites à moins de 100 km de Verdun. C'était difficile de trouver des produits d'ici. Nous avons fait une recherche dans une de nos maison et sur 20 items aucun n'était du Canada, même pas la compote de pomme même si les pommes sont en saison en ce moment! Cela nous a fait beaucoup réfléchir sur le fait que le Canada fait beaucoup de produits mais les autres produits d'ailleurs sont plus populaires, peut-être car ils sont moins chers.

Acheter localement c'est bien parce que ça crée des emplois et c'est meilleur pour l'environnement car nos produits font moins de voyage. Si toutes les semaines, chaque famille québécoise remplaçait 20$ d'achats de biens provenant de l'extérieur par la même valeur en produits québécois, plus de 100 000 emplois pourraient être créés.

En conclusion, c'est un sujet très important à aborder. Nous espérons vous avoir fait réfléchir sur le sujet.

En passant, les jeunes ont trouvé leur pâte à modeler chez Bojeux Inc., dont l'usine est située à Anjou. C'est là qu'est fabriquée la fameuse pâte à modeler Tutti Frutti aux parfums tellement appétissants qu'on voudrait la manger!

This very site started because Isabelle had the vision to set it in motion. But where did she get that vision? It started with furniture - or the lack of it.
