Easy redecorating on a budget
Blog post written by: Judy Brown
Giving your rooms a facelift is a great way to lift your spirits in these tough economic times and you don't have to spend a lot to give your home a makeover. Just focus on one room at a time. Get yourself a little note book and go room by room, making notes on what might make each room look better. There are many thrifty ways to save on redecorating and it is very satisfying to use your own creativity to change your decor.
To Paint or Not to Paint?
Just the thought of painting ceilings and walls makes me tired, and having to buy gallons of paint can be expensive. You don't have to paint all the walls in a room; change the whole look and feel of any room by making one wall a focal point. Paint in a neutral light colour and the room will seem brighter and larger; a dark color gives a room a feeling of warmth and makes a big room seem cozier.
You don't need to paint at all if you don't want to get into that. A good wash job will freshen up any room.
Redecorating Tips for Kids Rooms
I stumbled upon Felt Fantasia while looking through our vendor list. Create a whimsical story on your child's wall with peel and stick felt decorations. Makes an instant impact and takes very little time to change the entire look and feel of the room.
Do the kids need inspiration? Paperpod Cardboard Creations, another of our unique Canadian vendors who care about the environment offer, "An innovative concept in creative toys & furniture for children in a range of environmentally friendly, cost effective, sturdy, and practical designs made from recycled corrugated cardboard." Get out the crayons and let the kids decorate a chair or playhouse to liven up a bedroom or playroom.
Inexpensive, Easy New Window Treatments
Beautifully simple and inexpensive window treatments to reflect your personal style are easy to make and, with a little creativity, a do-it-yourself window makeover will spruce up any room. Forget dragging out the sewing machine, you won't even need a needle and thread to create something fresh and stylish.
Find a fabric with finished edges that suits your décor and personal style, perhaps a tablecloth, vintage linen or printed flat sheet will do. Check out the thrift shops or antique stores for stylish clips or find clip-on rings at any of the large discount stores, clip them onto the fabric and hang on a new wooden rod. Instant room change!
Your New Bathroom Spa
Give the room a good scrubbing top to bottom, remove clutter from the countertops and purge every cupboard of old make-up and junk. Simple accessories will give your bathroom that spa look. Check out Trillium, another of our Canadian vendors. You'll find lovely handmade beauty products and scented candles to add a spa like touch to your bathroom decor.
These are just a few of the creative ways you can perk up your surroundings without spending a fortune. I have many more great tips to share in future posts so leave a comment and let me know what room you are redecorating.
