This wonderful book from children's author and illustrator Phoebe Gilman is a beautiful adaptation of a Jewish folk tale. In Something From Nothing, the lovely blanket that Grandpa made for Joseph has begun to wear thin. But all he has to do is bring it back to Grandpa, who knows there's always just enough fabric to turn it into something else.

First it becomes a jacket, then when that wears out, a vest. When there's only a tiny scrap of cloth left, he uses it to cover a button. Joseph is sad when he loses the button, but then he realizes that he has just enough of the old blanket left to make one more thing... a story!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Phoebe Gilman prefered the words to the pictures, and thought of herself as an artist rather than a writer. All her formal training was in art. She went to The High School of Art and Design. From there, it was a short skip and a jump over to The Art Student's League, after a brief detour to Hunter College. She spent fifteen years at the Ontario College of Art, teaching others how to draw and paint. It always surprised her to be called a writer

She was the beloved creator of the Jillian Jiggs series as well as The Gypsy Princess, Pirate Pearl, Little Blue Ben, The Balloon Tree, and Grandma and the Pirates.
She passed away in 2002.
