Product DescriptionStruggling to Survive.“In 1995, Dozay(Arlene) Christmas presented a pointed metaphor of her existence as a First Nations person in the Sydney Region. Her image of a solitary tree, one which can be read as half dead or half alive, is precariously positioned diagonally in front of a forest of belching smoke stacks. Lurking in the soil beneath the tree, and mingling with its roots are the symbols of Mi’kmaq Petroglyphs. Through this it is understood that the way of her ancestors still nourish the life that is left in the tree. Fittingly, this painting was produced as a gift to her son upon his graduation, as a maternal affirmation to coax him to survive and grow, in spite of the multitude of threatening cultural and industrial forces on the horizon for him, Curator Peter Dykhuis Nova Scotia Art Gallery.
